Chapter Ten

The limo driver opens the door and Buffy lifts the skirt of her long evening gown before climbing in. Angel waves goodbye to the others leaving before following her. She collapses against the cool leather and smiles at him.

Angel: You look tired.

Buffy: A little, but it was simply perfect.

Angel: It was.

He wraps his arm around her shoulder and she eases beside him. His lips immediately capture hers. Their tongues tangle for a few moments before he pulls back.

Angel: I told the driver to drive around until curfew.

Buffy: Good.

She drags his mouth back to hers and resumes the mutual assault. As the kiss continues, he holds her close and slowly lowers her onto her back. She revels in the feel of his hands stroking her shoulder and neck. They are lost in the sensations of each other as their lips and tongues continue to tango.

Buffy suddenly becomes aware of his hand sliding from her bare shoulder and cupping her breast. The feeling is almost electric in nature and causes her to arch into his hand. A faint whimper escapes her throat as his hand fondles her gently. She is overcome with the need for more but more what she is not sure until his fingers pinch the satin fabric covering her taunt nipple. She is driven by her needs and begins to attack his mouth more savagely. Her fingers dig into his scalp and back as she tries to draw him tighter.

Another whimper escapes as his lips leave hers and begin a slow descent to her neck. She feels like her whole body is on fire and presses closer to him in hopes he can somehow quench the flames. She moans as his lips glide over her shoulder. The movement of the thin strap of her evening gown down her arm is like fingernails on her hypersensitive skin. She tosses her head back and arches her back more.

She can only moan as she feels the cool air in the car caress her newly exposed breast.

Angel looks up at her face and watches it distort in passion as he begins to run his tongue over her hard pink peak. As her fingers press into his scalp, he follows their demands and envelops the tip with his mouth. He begins to suckle gently and then harder as small sounds of pleasure emanate from her. His hands cradle her plump flesh as his mouth ravages and teases her sensitive nipple.

She is lost in the waves of pleasurable feelings when they both feel the car come to a complete stop. Angel glances out the window and then into her flushed face.

Buffy: Home?

Angel: Uh huh.

He quickly slides her strap up and restores her modesty. Buffy slowly sits up and looks at him with eyes still brimming with lust. She glances toward the lighted front porch.

Buffy: I uh guess I should go in.

Angel: I guess.

He takes her hand as he signals the driver. He looks back into her face as they wait for the door to open. Buffy steps out into the pre-dawn air and stands staring at the house. Angel steps beside her and wraps his arm around her back. He walks with her to the front porch.

Buffy: Tonight was……..well perfect.

Angel: You are what is perfect.

He glances at the door.

Angel: You better get inside before your mom comes out here.

He leans down and gives her a gentle kiss.

Buffy: Good night…….I mean good morning.

Angel: Call me later.

Buffy: Okay.

He watches her unlock the door and go inside before heading back to the limousine.

Inside the house, Buffy glances around before flipping off the hall light and moving up the stairs. Seeing the light filtering from her mother’s room she walks to the doorway.

Buffy: I’m home.

Joyce: Did you have a good time?

Buffy: The best.

Joyce: I’m glad. So it was every thing you imagined.

Buffy swirls around once before sitting on the edge of the bed.

Buffy: The night could not have been any more fabulous.

Joyce: That is what the senior prom should be.

Buffy: The prom could not have been more perfect Oh and the party after at the hotel was so wonderful. Mr. and Mrs. Chase really did it right.

Joyce: Was it elaborate?

Buffy: Not really. I think that is why it was so perfect. It didn’t go overboard. They had food, god did they have food. And lots of drinks and a DJ. The prom was nice and the band was good but I think everyone was more relaxed at the after-party. A few kids even changed before coming.

Joyce: You didn’t want to?

Buffy: Nope. I did lose my shoes and Angel took off his tie and jacket. He looks so handsome in a tux.

Joyce: He does.

Buffy flops back on the bed and smiles at her mom.

Joyce: Well I think Cinderella needs to get some sleep.

Buffy: Uh huh.

She sits up and leans over and hugs and kisses her mom.

Joyce: I’ll be at the gallery all day if you need me when you finally wake up.

Buffy: Okay. And dinner?

Joyce: I’ll bring something home. Don’t you have studying to do?

Buffy: I can count on you to bring that up.

Joyce: Well you have finals this week and you do want to graduate next weekend.

Buffy: I know. Let me get say eight hours sleep then I will spend the rest of my Sunday with the books.

Joyce: Night sweetie.

Buffy trudges into her room and closes the door. She stands in front of her full-length mirror admiring her gown. She slowly unzips it down the back. Letting it pool at her feet as she looks down at her breast. The one nipple is still a dark pink and she can see small dots of red almost resembling a hickey. She steps out of the dress and picks it up. Her mind wanders over the last half hour of her date as she hangs up the dress and slips on her sleepwear.

She is trying to absorb and adjust to his uncharacteristic but not unwanted attention. Knowing she will not be able to sleep until she talks to him, she picks up her cell and hit’s the buttons. Her fingers fiddle with the drawstring on her shorts as she hears the first ring. On the second she hears a click followed by his husky voice.

Angel: Hey love.

Buffy: You knew it was me?

Angel: Of course.

Buffy: Did I wake you?

Angel: No. I was just getting in bed.

Buffy: Oh.

Angel: You okay?

Buffy: Yes. I just thought we should talk.

Angel: I know. I just thought you would want to sleep first.

Buffy: Like I can.

Angel: Oh. Are you upset?

Buffy: Oh god no. I just, well we, you, I mean I.

He waits as she takes a few deep breaths.

Buffy: I liked it.

Angel: Me too. Buffy, I know we have talked a lot about waiting and I am willing to keep waiting.

Buffy: Oh. I thought tonight might mean the waiting had stopped.

Angel: We both have to be ready.

Buffy: I know. But when you are, I’ll be here.

Angel: What?

Buffy: I know you want to wait and I respect it. It is not like I have any experience.

Angel: Buffy, I’m ready. I just don’t want to rush you.

Buffy: Rush? Rush me? Angel if you could rush me any less we would be moving backwards.

He laughs into the phone.

Angel: I’m sorry. You just sound so cute.

Buffy: Oh thanks. I am sitting here with lusty thoughts and a very sore…..and you call me cute.

Angel: What is sore?

Buffy: Nothing.

Angel: Hmmm. I could make the other one match.

Buffy: Okay did I just mention the lusty thoughts?

Angel: Did I mention the ones I am having?

There is a long pause.

Buffy: So are we uh well done waiting?

Angel: I think so.

Buffy: Oh.

She glances at the clock.

Buffy: Mom should leave for the gallery in three hours. She said she will be gone all day.

Angel: Buffy, you are eager. But let’s plan this. I want everything to be perfect.

Buffy: If you are there, I think perfect is expected.

Angel: Maybe we should wait until I get back from New York.

Buffy: What? That is three months. Are you serious?

Angel: I just don’t want to come back and find you regretted it because you found someone else.

Buffy: What? Angel are you insane? I love you and only you.

She pauses a moment.

Buffy: But maybe you will find someone in New York.

Angel: Buffy, you are my someone. I’m in this forever.

Buffy: Me too.

Angel: Good.

Buffy: So when?

Angel: The graduation trip. You want to share a room?

Buffy: Of course but what about your sister?

Angel: She can get her own roommate.

Buffy: She won’t tell your parents?

Angel: She will but I don’t think it will shock them. We’re not children.

Buffy: I guess not but my mom might disagree.

Angel: If you would rather not.

Buffy: No, I want to.

Angel: You’re sure?

Buffy: Positive. You’ve got yourself a roomie.

Angie: Good cause I thought I might end up with Xander.

Buffy: Or Oz.

Angel: I will take you over either of them.

Buffy: Me too.

Angel: I hate to say this but you need your sleep.

Buffy: We both do.

Angel: But you have exams.

Buffy: I know and you already finished. Just two more weeks and you head to New York.

Angel: I know. But it is a great opportunity.

Buffy: I know.

Angel: Go to sleep.

Buffy: Okay.

Angel: Call me later.

Buffy: I will. Sleep tight.

Angel: You too.

Thursday Afternoon

Buffy enters the front door and drops her bag on the sofa before moving into the kitchen.

Joyce: All done?

Buffy: Uh huh. I am all done with school. All I’ve got to do now is show up Saturday and pick up my diploma and I’m a high school graduate.

Joyce: You are. I can still remember how good that felt.

Buffy: It is amazing.

Joyce: Oh, I talked to your father today.

Buffy: He will be there Saturday, right?

Joyce: He said he definitely would. He will meet us here before the ceremony.

Buffy: Good.

Joyce: I hear a but in there.

Buffy: Oh I want him there. Of course I do. It is just he has never met Angel and well…..

Joyce: Honey, don’t be so worried. Angel is a fine young man and I know your father will be glad to finally meet him after all this time.

Buffy: I guess. Well that is if he knew I had a boyfriend.

Joyce looks at Buffy in shock.

Joyce: You never told him about Angel?

Buffy: Well there never was the right time. I was going to tell him at Christmas and you know how that trip was. And then he didn’t show at my birthday.

Joyce: You have been dating the him for nine months and never told your father.

Buffy: I know. I know.

Joyce: Well you will tell him Saturday. And I mean before they meet.

Buffy: I will. As soon as I see him I will tell him. That will give him a little time to calm down before I introduce them.

Joyce: I still can’t believe you never told him.

Buffy: Can we change the subject?

Joyce: Sure. So do you have everything for your trip?

Buffy: Just about. I‘ll go get the last few things tomorrow.

Joyce: I just hope you kids behave.

Buffy walks over and fixes a glass of soda.

Joyce: Okay, out with it.

Buffy turns around and looks at her.

Joyce: There is something going on and you don’t want me to know.

Buffy: Why do you think that?

Joyce: Buffy.

Buffy: Okay. You remember the conversation we had back in January?

Joyce: No. Which one?

Buffy: On my birthday.

Joyce sits thinking for a moment and then looks at Buffy with concern.

Buffy: I promised I would tell you.

Joyce: Have you already?

Buffy: No.

Joyce: And I can’t talk you out of it?

Buffy: No.

Joyce: You’re sure you’re ready?

Buffy: We are. Mom, this is not just a sudden decision. We’ve talked about it for months and are not going into this in the heat of the moment.

Joyce: And you are not doing this cause you are worried about him going to New York for the summer?

Buffy: No. Mom, you don’t understand. I was the one who was ready first. Angel wanted to wait until we were sure our relationship was strong enough.

Joyce: Strong enough?

Buffy: He told me he had been in relationships before that well were not strong enough before they had sex and then they became only about sex. He didn’t want that to happen to us.

Joyce: He is a very smart man.

She thinks for a moment as Buffy watches.

Joyce: So you think you are old enough and ready for the all the responsibilities?

Buffy: Mom, we will be careful. We don’t want a baby.

Joyce: I’m glad to hear that. So you won’t have any problems buying birth control.

Buffy: Angel will do that.

Joyce: That is not my point. If you are old enough to have sex then you are old enough to protect yourself.

Buffy: What are you saying?

Joyce: You go into the store and buy your own condoms for the trip and I won’t stop you from going.

Buffy: You’re serious?

Joyce: I am.

Buffy looks at her drink and back up into her mother’s eyes.

Buffy: Okay.

Noon on Friday

Buffy walks into the gallery and waves at Tina before moving to her mom’s office. She sets her bags on one chair before sitting down to wait for Joyce to get off the phone. Buffy begins to fiddle with the gold pen and pencil set on the desk until her mom concludes her conversation.

Joyce: Hey sweetie. Finish your shopping?

Buffy: Pretty much.

Joyce: So you went to the drug store?

Buffy jumps up and closes the office door.

Buffy: Let’s not talk about that here.

Joyce: All you have to say is yes or no.

Buffy: No. Okay. I will do it later.

Joyce: Well if you don’t…….

Buffy: I know. I will go. I just could not ask Willow’s mom to take me there for that. I will do it.

Joyce: Okay. So you want to go to lunch?

Buffy: Ready when you are.

They both stand up and Buffy grabs her bags. Joyce talks to Tina before they leave.

Later

Joyce and Buffy step out of the restaurant carrying foam boxes.

Buffy: I love these big lunches. We get an easy dinner.

Joyce: Yes and we get time together. I just can’t believe you will be leaving for LA soon.

Buffy: You still have me for three months and besides LA is not that far.

Joyce: I know.

Joyce pulls the jeep into the parking lot. Buffy glances up and then turns to her mother.

Buffy: You are like a dog with a bone.

Joyce: Come on.

Joyce opens her door.

Buffy: You are going with me?

Joyce: No. But I do need a few things too.

Joyce walks to the entrance of the drug store and Buffy follows slowly. She waits for her mother to disappear inside before she pushes open the door. Buffy picks up a red plastic basket and walks over to a large display of sun products. She picks out a bottle of sunscreen and another of blue Aloe Vera gel with lidocane. She moves on to the display of magazines and picks up two.

Buffy begins to stare at the signs hung over the aisles and makes her way to the one listing contraceptives. She moves slowly down the aisle and is relieved to be alone. She glances around once more before looking at the large display. She is stunned to see the wide selection.

Buffy (whispers to herself): Great. Which ones?

She stares at the various types with an occasional glance to assure no one is around. Only thing she knows from her sex education class is they should have that spermicidal stuff. Well that barely narrows it down. She suddenly sees a variety pack. The box contains six each of four different types. It seems like a big box but she is just glad she does not have to figure the best type. She shoves the box under the magazines and makes sure that it is not visible as she walks toward the front of the store.

Buffy stops as she glances up to the two registers. Behind one counter is a boy about her age and the other is a woman who appears in her 60s. Buffy bites her lip and then walks to the woman. She stands nervously glancing around as she sets her basket on the counter.

Clerk: Will this be all?

Buffy: Yes, Ma’am.

Buffy starts pulling out her cash and avoids the woman’s face as she rings up the items. She quickly hands her the cash and does not even realize she is holding her breath as she takes her change and watches the purchases being bagged. She sighs softly as she takes the bag and moves rapidly for the door.

In the parking lot she stops and takes a refreshing breath and heads to the jeep. She crawls in and looks over at her mother.

Joyce: All done?

Buffy: Yes. Can I go home now?

Buffy tosses her bag in the back seat and crosses her arms. Joyce starts the jeep and heads for the house. Buffy watches out the window and then smiles at her mom.

Buffy: Never knew there were so many kinds.

Joyce: Hmmm, I guess there is.

Buffy looks back out the window.

Joyce: So what did you pick?

Buffy: A variety pack.

Joyce: Good idea. You did get spermicidal?

Buffy: Yes. I did know that much.

Joyce chuckles and makes Buffy glare are her

Buffy: What are you laughing at?

Joyce: Just the irony of us sitting here discussing condoms. If someone had told me last week, I would never have believed it.

Buffy: Me either.

Buffy smiles.

Buffy: Mom, thanks for not treating me like a kid.

Joyce: It isn’t easy. I’m still fighting the urge to lock you in the basement.

Buffy: Glad you’re curbing that reaction.

Joyce pulls into the driveway and helps Buffy carry the bags and food into the house.

Joyce: I will see tonight.

Buffy: What time? Angel is suppose to come over and I know he can’t until you get home.

Joyce looks around and sighs.

Joyce: Not sure but I guess he can go ahead and come over.

She looks Buffy in the eye.

Joyce: But stay down here.

Buffy: Of course. I think we can wait for the trip.

She smirks at her mom.

Joyce: I need to go.

Joyce walks out the door and Buffy grabs her bags and heads to her room. She drops the bags on the floor and flops on the bed. She relaxes for a moment before rolling over and picking up the phone. After a few buttons she listens the to ringing.

Angel: Hello.

Buffy: Hi baby.

Angel: Hi yourself.

Buffy: I got all my errands done and was wondering what time you were coming over.

Angel: Whenever your mom gets there.

Buffy: Nope.

Angel: Huh?

Buffy: Mom says it is okay to come over before she gets home.

Angel: Really? Why?

Buffy: Well I think she has accepted I am an adult finally. Or is trying to.

Angel: So she is not worried about us being alone.

Buffy: I think she gave that up when I told her we are sharing a room on the trip.

Angel: You did?

Buffy: Yes.

Angel: I’m glad. I hate the idea of lying to her.

Buffy: Me too. Plus I promised her months ago I would tell her. So what time you coming over?

Angel: On my way.

Buffy: You got the movies?

Angel: I’ll pick them up. They’re on hold.

Buffy: See ya soon.

Angel: Love you.

Buffy: Love ya too.

She hangs up and sighs before getting up and changing her jeans and t-shirt for a sundress. She takes down her ponytail and freshens her make up and lipstick. By the time he arrives, she has snacks and drinks on the coffee table.
